Let’s first ground ourselves with the realization that ultimately what we want is complete fulfillment of all our desires. Now imagine there is a mantra that will instantly give you the ultimate fulfillment. Most people told me NO they don’t want such a mantra because once they recite that mantra and achieve ultimate fulfillment there seems to be nothing left to do after that. Ironical! There seems to be no way out.
We do want it but we don’t believe it’s possible to have it so we never thought beyond it. We interpret things like “life/happiness is a journey not a destination” such to protect us from venturing into the unknown. I believe that when ultimate fulfillment is achieved it really means achieving enlightenment.
The question remains why don’t we want the most sought after. Our “Human Program” has a very unique sense; let’s call it “me”. As we discussed before this sense overpowers the entire program (all about me). It does it to such an extent that we think we cannot live without it. Usually a person can live without eyes but not without “me”.
The program is designed (like everything else in this universe) to survive at whatever cost. Buddha realized after enlightenment that there is no Self (“me”); putting its survival in danger. The sense “me” knows that and so wouldn’t let us cause its demise. So what is the next best solution for people whose me-sense wouldn’t let them have what they really want?
