What is the next best solution for people whose me-sense wouldn’t let them have what they really want?

I suggest give the “me-sense” what it needs and at some point it will let you have what you really want.

The “me-sense” needs a purpose (that it can call its own) to survive. Without purpose there is no reason for it to live. It needs to fulfill a purpose to be satisfied. Short term goals only lead to constant dissatisfaction because we are in a constant search for the next goal. So you must create a purpose/desire that is larger than necessities, something that will take you out of the “one desire after next” mode. Working towards such a large purpose/desire will give the program a focal point and avoid creating unnecessary interim/short-term/distractive desires.

Let’s assume you set this goal to start a new business in an area that you enjoy working. You invest all your spare time (after your day job) thinking and working on it. You will probably find time that never thought you had. After a few years of working hard you are actually able to work full time on your business, still it being the focal point. A few years later you realize you are set in the routine and working for you own business becomes very similar to your day job 5 years ago. You look back and see how much you enjoyed these 5 years because you weren’t thinking about a new car or a new house or other such desires. But once you achieved that larger than life goal, you realize that you are still not completely fulfilled. You may realize that complete fulfillment of all your desires actually means a state of no desires. Realization comes from experience; then you may be ready to try the mantra.
