Who is right and who is wrong?

You have probably heard nothing is right or wrong there is only one truth. I believe it really means that everyone thinks that what they are doing is right from there perspective but it may be wrong from other persons perspective. We always see things from our perspective or world view which we have developed based on our experiences in the past.

A baby doesn’t have this unique perspective, so sees things as they are which is called the truth without being tainted by the color of perspective.

If we look at the story of Robin Hood, we can clearly see that some people will consider him a thief and some will consider him a philanthropist. So the same act be perceived right or wrong depending on which camp you are in.

We must keep our minds open and not blinded by our perspective. We should adapt a new paradigm to consider that everyone is essentially good and no one bad. Nothing is right or wrong we make it right or wrong

I agree. Much of what we lump together as being right or wrong seems arbitrary.

Though, I tend to shy away from absolutes, moralistic relativism does not seem right 

Perhaps, it’s the romantic in me, but I believe that hidden in the pile of right and wrong is a universal truth or two.

Here is a possible contender:

If everyone can do it, and it is a symbiotic action (benefits all participants) then that it is good/right.

Of course, we our now stuck on trying to agree as to what is beneficial.

So, I think what is missing, is the goal. In systems theory or gaming, that which helps you attain the goal is good, that which inhibits you is bad.

So, before we can assess what is good or bad I suggest that we need to establish the goal. Why do we exist? Or, what is the purpose of life?

In evolutionary terms, we are here to evolve. So that which allows us to expand and enrich our gene pool is good. That which does not is bad.

You said it pretty well but isn't our brain the one that needs this Goal to classify things as good or bad?

Other living forms probably don't classify actions as right or wrong so why should we?

Hum...

I think you are making a huge presumption about how other living forms perceive their reality. How do you know they don't classify things as right and wrong, good or bad?

I have known dogs, for example, who seem to be able to perceive a person's character.
They seem to group people into at least two categories: good, and bad.

Dogs and cats are also known to get back at their master by doing something negative when they perceived that they have been slighted. (left alone too long etc)

How would they know what to do, if they can't discern between what is good or bad?

Yes, I'd say right/wrong good/evil are artifacts of being alive rather than a human or spiritual thing. Something is bad if it hurts us. If we were immortal/indestructable would good and bad really be relevant concepts to us? That's one of the problems I have with religious dogma. Why would a god judge things in such terms?

I believe that there is a good and bad as in what is good and bad for us individually and as a whole but as far as good and bad as in the idea of a person being good or bad...we all do things that could be considered good or bad. I think that's what makes us human.

One of my problems with religion is that it immediately sets us up for failure. Speaking about Christianity for example, as this is the religion thrust upon me from birth, simply said that we are sinners from birth and need to have a saviour to be able to enter heaven seems to me to be a good way of keeping us in line.

Forcing us to follow some moral code because we're afraid of upsetting some invisible being rather than actually doing it because it is right.

As far as what's good or bad for us as a whole, I think anything that we do or create has inherent good and bad aspects to it. Such as, technology is good but it brings about bad things like burning fossil fuels for cars or creating a lot of wasted materials such as plastics. The list goes on.

I think if we as humans who are both good and bad, when we create anything we are probably doomed to create things that are good and bad.

I think in order for good to exist, bad must exist; that is how we see and understand the word. More on adveta later.

I agree that in order to decide what is good vs. bad we need a goal. For most people the general goal is to "feel" good.

So, anything that feels good is good initially, but later we may realize that it was bad because it wasn't a symbiotic action.
